Freelance marketing consultant Shanna McGarry is an award-winning writer, designer and photographer with 15 years of professional experience across all forms of print, online and promotional media, including websites, books, magazines, digital presentations, brochures and other materials for clients in the United States and abroad.
Holding a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Shanna studied print layout and design under Pulitzer Prize-winning designer Susan Mango Curtis and web design under Jill Blackman of the Chicago Tribune's interactive news department.
As the in-house graphic designer at the South Carolina Historical Society, Shanna earned a 2007 American Inhouse Design Award from Graphic Design USA magazine for her redesign of the Society’s quarterly magazine, Carologue, for which she was also photographer and advertising sales manager.
As a design consultant, Shanna provides web and graphic design services to a wide range of businesses, organizations and individuals, the most recent of which include Kickapoo Free Press (Wis.), Kickapoo Gold Maple Syrup, Joggling Board Press, and Brightflower Nursery. She is also a publishing consultant for self-published authors, providing editing services, graphic design and technical coaching.
Shanna has written and photographed for numerous print and online news outlets, including Chicago Wilderness Magazine, the Charleston Post and Courier (S. C.), Clearfield’s The Progress (Pa.), peelworld.com and uraniummusic.com. Her non-commercial photography has been honored in the Charleston City Paper’s annual photography contest.
For several years, Shanna was a public relations account executive at Lindstrom Beatty Communications in Chicago serving a distinguished roster of non-profit and arts clients in all capacities related to promotions: media relations, copy-writing, advertising design, web design, direct marketing, event planning and coordinating, and market research. As part of that work, she helped create and launch the Women’s Resource Fairs marketing cooperative.
Since 2006, Shanna’s multi-tiered skill set has helped to bring national critical acclaim to Charleston, S.C.-based book publisher Joggling Board Press. In addition to managing sales, marketing, public relations and staff training, she has served as webmaster and provided promotional writing and editorial consulting services, technical photo assistance and graphic design work, including book interior and jacket design of large-format museum-quality books and related promotional materials.
